There Are People Who Help

Photo of a garden ornament of people linking arms in a circle.

There are people who help
When you need it most,
When the chips are down
And you’re almost toast.

Who remind you that rest
And a cup of tea,
Are as vital as work
For the best you can be.

They remind you of just
How far you have come,
And make you feel proud
Of all that you’ve done.

They cheer when you win,
No matter how small,
And whenever you fail
They’re the ones who you call.

A shoulder to cry on
Or a hand to hold,
You’d do the same for them
Without being told.

You tell them your stories
And they make you laugh,
Though the jokes that they tell
Are really quite naff.

They love all that you are,
No need to pretend,
For these are the people
Who you can call friends.

The Bird’s Nest

Illustration of a bird's nest in a shoe.

This is a story about a bird
Who built her nest in a place absurd.
She took some twigs and some feathers too
And made a nest inside a shoe.

She made her nest inside a shoe
And the other birds said it wouldn’t do
To lay your eggs in such a place
But she just laughed and pulled a face.

She just laughed and pulled a face
And sat on her eggs to keep them safe.
She kept them warm all day and night
But one day something wasn’t right.

One day something wasn’t right;
She woke up with a terrible fright.
The other birds came with the news –
A boy was trying to find his shoes!

A boy was trying to find his shoes?
The bird was scared her nest she’d lose.
"We told you not to build it there."
"Please come and help, don’t stand and stare."

"Please come and help, don’t stand and stare."
So they tried to move the nest with care
But it wouldn’t move, the nest was stuck.
It seemed they were all out of luck.

It seemed they were all out of luck
When a girl took boots down from a hook.
"Today you’ll wear your boots instead;
Looks like the birds need your shoes," she said.

"Looks like the birds need your shoes," she said.
"When the chicks are hatched they must be fed."
So they put out food and before long
The baby birds were big and strong.

The baby birds were big and strong.
The other birds said, "We were wrong;
Girls and boys are the best
And a shoe is a great place for a nest."

The Problem

Poem on photo of balls of yarn.

I’ve a problem here,
Of the feline sort;
Your cat, my dear,
It’s she I caught,
Stealing the wool,
From my knitting bag.
(It used to be full,
But I don’t like to nag.)
If it could be returned,
When she’s done with it,
My thanks you’ll have earned,
As I’d quite like to knit.

William

Poem on graphic background of reflections on water.

William went to school,
Every day as a rule.
One day he was late,
And snuck past the gate,
Ending up down at the pool.

William dived right in,
Not knowing how to swim.
He just splashed around,
Afraid he might drown,
And made a terrible din.

William’s good today,
He never goes astray.
He sits at his desk,
Not telling the rest,
What really happened that day.
